Training

We want to help more researchers thrive, in and out of academia.

The problem

New PIs are given little, if any, training in how to run a research group. This is despite being given responsibilities akin to a small business owner including; creating a cohesive and productive team, training and developing others, establishing the culture and leadership, project management and ensuring that funding is continuously acquired.

ECRs are provided little training beyond lab skills and an academic career pathway. This leaves them poorly prepared for future careers.

Without training, many are left to learn as they go with many failing, many more surviving and a few thriving.

We want to help more researchers thrive, in and out of academia.

The solution

We provide tailored training in open science, publishing, academic skills, leadership and much more. We also create materials and guides for ECRs, new PIs and guidelines for institutions and funders.

We also beleive that students should be given considerably more preparation for alternative careers. To this end, we provide support and resources for students and PIs in alternative career routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is training important?

Without training, researchers may lack vital skills

Don’t institutions provide training?

Yes, many institutions have fantastic researcher development offices that provide broad training. However, training works best when personalised and tailored to individual needs. Moreover, these institutional options are often too general and not comprehensive enough.

Why are alternative careers important?

Academia produces an abundance of new PhD students – far too many for the available academic positions. As such, the majority of PhD students will go on to pursue non-academic/research careers. Despite this, academia still heavily focusses on only the academic career path. Therefore there is a need for additional resources and training around alternative options.

What support can you give for non-academic careers?

We aim to highlight the variety of alternative career options available, provide advice and training on useful transferable skills and offer tailored coaching and advice.

Do I need to be a leader?

Not at all! A great manager is all that is required for a fantastic lab head. However, genuine leadership enhances that and elevates not only you but those around you to greater things.

Do you offer career coaching?

We can provide career coaching to individuals, at cost.
